Types of Network Topologies and Their Strengths and Weaknesses

Bus Topology
In the Bus topology, all computers and equipment are connected to a linear cable.
The advantages of Bus Topology are as follows:
• Very easy to connect computers and other equipment to the bus cable
• There are not many cables connected
The shortcomings of the Bus Topology are as follows:
• If one of the connections in the bus is disconnected, then the entire network will not work
• Terminator is needed at two ends of the main cable
• It is difficult to identify errors if the entire network does not work
• It is not recommended to use this topology as a single network in a large building.

Ring Topology

In ring topologies, computers and equipment are connected to a main cable such that the main kabal forms a ring - the ends of the main cables are connected together, forming a continuous loop.
The advantages of using ring topology are:
• If one of the equipment is damaged, it will not interfere with the network work because each equipment is not connected directly but via the bus.
The disadvantages of using ring topology are:
• If the cable is damaged, then all equipment cannot function
• Difficult in Management

Star Topology (Star)

Star topology is designed so that all computers and other equipment are connected directly to a network center in the form of a hub or concentrator. Hubs or concentrators act as managers and control of all functions in the network. The hub also functions as a data flow repeater. Data on the star-studded network always crosses the hub or concentrator before proceeding to the final destination. Star typology usually uses TP cables for communication media. In addition to TP cables, coaxial or optical fiber cables can also be used, but it is rarely done.
The advantages of using the star topology are as follows:
• Easy in installation and cabling
• There is no interference in the network, when installing equipment or removing equipment.
• Easy to detect errors
• Easy to remove equipment

The loss if used star topology is as follows:
• Requires a long enough cable
• If the hub or concentrator is damaged, network functions will not work
• Investment is quite expensive because it requires hub or concentrator equipment
The protocol used in the star topology is usually Etherat or Local Tolk. Token Ring uses a star-like topology called star-wired ring (ring topology with star wiring)

Tree Topology
The tree topology combines two topologies at once, namely linear bus topology and star topology. This network topology includes several configuration groups of star-topped workstations which are then connected in the main cable as linear buses. In the tree topology it is possible to expand networks easily.
The advantages of using the tree topology are as follows
• Wiring point to point for each part of the network
• Supported by many hardware and software vendors

The topology tree losses are as follows
• The total length of each part is limited by the type of cabling used
• If the main line breaks, all parts of the network do not work
• Difficult in configuration and wiring
