Multiple LAN Types

In the Network there are several types of LAN. Some of the types of LAN in question are:

• ARCNet (Attached Resource Computer Network)
• Token Ring
• FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface)
• ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode)
• Local Talk
• Ethernet and
• WLAN (Wireless LAN)

ARCNet
ARCNet was first developed by the datapoint corporation. ARCNet uses a protocol developed by the datapoint corporation, ARCNet does not use the IEEE standard protocol commonly used on networks. There are two types of ARCNet based on the network card used, namely low impedance ARCNet and high impedance. The maximum speed that the ARCNet network can achieve is 2.5 Mbps. Using data transmission media in the form of RG-62 coaxial cable or UTP cable. The access method used in the ARCNet network is token passing (token passing). Tokens that are white bits around the network station. If a workstation gets a token, then the workstation has the right to send data, while the other workstation must wait until it gets the turn to obtain a token.

Token Ring
Token Ring Network First developed by IBM (institute business machine). Each workstation is connected with a cable that forms a circle (ring). Each node must be connected to a concentrator / hub called MAU or MSAU (multi station access unit). The access method used in the Token Ring network is called bypassing Token.Token which is a sign bit rotating around the network station. If a workstation gets a token, then the workstation has the right to send data, while the other workstation must wait until it gets a token . Transmission media used on Token Ring networks in the form of cables made by IBM itself. Network cards used in networks Token rings are of two kinds, namely network cards 4 Mbps and 16 Mbps. 16 Mbps network cards can be used at speeds of 4 Mbps or 16 Mbps, while 4 Mbps network cards can only be used at 4 Mbps.

FDDI
FDDI is a network that is mainly used to connect two or more LANs using a high speed fiber network. The access method used in this network is a token pass. The main advantage of FDDI networks is their speed. The speed that can be achieved by FDDI is 100 Mbps using Optical fiber.

ATM
ATM is a network that can send data in the form of small packages. Unlike the other networks that send data with a long packet. The speed that can be achieved is 155 Mbps or more. High transmission speed is an advantage that can be obtained if the ATM network. ATM stands for Asynchronous Transfer Mode. Transmission media used at ATMs can be either fiber optic cables or UTP cables. ATMs are mostly used to connect two or more LANs. ATMs are also often used by ISPs (internet service providers) to support high speed internet access for users.

Local Talk
Local Talk is a network that was first developed by Apple Computer Inc. For Macintosh Computer Computers. The method used by Local Talk networks called CSMA / CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) on this network is used Local Talk adapter and special TP cable that can be used to connect a series of computers through a serial port. Data transmission speeds that can be achieved by this network are only 230 Kbps. This is a weakness in the Local Talk network.

Ethernet
Ethenet's network became popular because Ethernet networks have a good balance in speed, price and ease of installation. The standard Ethernet network is defined by the IEEE as the IEEE 802.3 Standard. This standard defines the rules for configuring an Ethernet network including how elements in Ethernet networks interact. There are several types of Ethernet networks including the following.
• 10Base -5 uses thick coaxial cable (RG-8)
• 10Base -2 uses a thin coaxial cable (RG-58)
• 10Base -36 uses cable broadband
• 10Base -T uses Category 3 UTP cable
• 10Base -F uses an Optical Fiber cable

As a development of the standard 802.3 Ethernet network, a standard IEEE 802.3u Fast Ethernet network is established for Ethernet networks that requires higher transmission speeds. This standard increases Ethernet network speed from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps with changes to the cable structure.

There are three types of Fast Ethernet networks, namely:
• 100Base-TX uses category 5 UTP cable
• 100Base - FX uses Optical fiber cables
• 100Base - T4 which uses two UTP cables in category 3.

Standard 100Base-TX is popular because it is very compatible with standard 10Base-T
The next development of the Ethernate network is Gigabit Ethernat which uses the IEEE 802.3z standard. this network system can transmit maximum data up to 1000 Mbps. there are two types of this network, namely:

• 1000Base-X uses fiber optic cable and twinax
• 1000Base-T uses UTP cable category 5e

This fiber has just developed an Ethernet network that is capable of transmitting data up to 10000 Mbps. Intel has developed a network card for networks with this speed.

WLAN
WLAN network is a LAN network that does not use cable as a data transmission medium. This network uses electromagnetic waves in transmitting data. WLAN networks are based on the IEEE 802.11 Standard. Initial development of WLAN networks is only able to transfer data up to a maximum of 2 Mbps. Then this network is repaired, so it is able to transfer up to 54 Mbps. The latest development, WLAN networks are capable of transferring data up to 108 Mbps.
WLAN networks require special NIC equipment that can be installed in the PCI, USB or PCMCIA.NIC slots for WLAN networks equipped with antennas in place of cable ports. Each device connected in a WLAN network can connect in an add-hoc manner between equipment or via WAP (wireless access point) that applies as a HUB or concentrator.
